CALGARY ACCIDENT LAWYERS FOR MOTOR VEHICLE & INJURY MATTERS

An accident inquiry should identify the incident, the injury, and the current status of insurance communications. A brief timeline helps the legal team understand the request. Bring available correspondence rather than relying only on a summary of what an adjuster said.

Our Calgary accident lawyers discuss the circumstances of the incident, the documentation connected to recovery, and the proposed legal work. A consultation provides an opportunity to ask what information may be needed and how the scope of representation would be agreed.

Every personal injury matter has its own facts. The existence of an injury does not let a website predict the value or outcome of a claim. Describe your situation clearly, identify relevant dates, and discuss individual advice with the legal team.

MOTOR VEHICLE ACCIDENTS

Explain when and where the collision occurred and what information you have received since. Your accident lawyer can discuss the records connected to the incident and the proposed next steps. Identify any police or insurer reference information that is available.

PERSONAL INJURY DOCUMENTATION

Keep a record of the information connected to your injury and treatment. Tell the team which documents exist during the consultation. Avoid putting detailed medical records in the initial web inquiry.

INSURANCE CORRESPONDENCE

Bring letters, claim references, and relevant messages from an insurer. The wording and current status matter. An accident lawyer can discuss the communications after reviewing the actual material.

WORK & DAILY ACTIVITIES

Explain the effect of the accident on your work and ordinary activities. Identify the records connected to those concerns. The consultation can discuss how your circumstances relate to the proposed personal injury work.

UPCOMING DATES

Tell the team the accident date and any dates mentioned in correspondence. Do not assume that ongoing insurance conversations resolve all timing questions. An initial inquiry is a request to discuss the matter, rather than confirmation that a claim has been started.

REPRESENTATION & FEES

Discuss the proposed terms of representation and the applicable fee arrangement with the firm. This site does not promise compensation or assume that a particular arrangement applies to every accident claim.

YOUR PRACTICE GUIDE

AFTER A COLLISION: ORGANIZE THE CLAIM AND RECOVERY RECORD

An injury claim can involve the collision itself, treatment, time away from work, and communications with insurers. A useful first review identifies each part without assuming that a settlement figure can be calculated from a short description.

01

YOUR COLLISION DATE MATTERS

Alberta’s published reform guidance says its Care-First automobile insurance system begins January 1, 2027. That makes the collision date an essential part of an inquiry. Do not assume that information written for the current system describes every future claim, or that a future benefits description governs an earlier collision.

State the exact date and the province where the accident happened. Identify the insurance policy and any correspondence already received. Ask counsel which framework applies to your circumstances and what information is needed to review the issue. The official guidance linked below explains the announced transition. Bring the date and documents to the conversation so the advice addresses your particular claim.

02

ACCIDENT BENEFITS AND OTHER CLAIM QUESTIONS

Alberta’s collision guidance explains that accident benefits coverage can be available regardless of who was at fault. Treatment and benefit questions should therefore be identified separately from a disagreement about responsibility for the collision. Bring the insurer’s forms, claim number, and letters so the team can see what has been requested or decided.

Tell counsel which insurer you are communicating with and what each communication concerns. A vehicle repair, treatment expense, income question, and proposed injury settlement may involve different parts of the file. Keeping those records organized helps the review address the actual issue, rather than treating every insurance letter as the same type of decision.

03

RECORD THE EVENT WITHOUT FILLING GAPS

Start with a short chronology: date, place, vehicles or people involved, the sequence you observed, and what happened immediately afterwards. Identify police or incident information already available, photographs, witnesses, and any existing video. Mark what you know directly and what you learned from another person.

Do not assume that a photograph or a police record answers every question about responsibility. The evidence needs to be reviewed together. If a fact is uncertain, preserve that uncertainty in your notes. A clear and accurate account is more useful than an attempt to make every part of the story sound complete before counsel has seen the records.

REQUEST A CONSULTATION
04

TREATMENT AND CHANGES OVER TIME

Identify the care you have received, the providers involved, and the dates of appointments. Keep existing treatment recommendations and records of expenses. Tell counsel about symptoms as they developed and about any earlier condition relevant to the discussion. A chronology helps distinguish the initial report from later changes.

Medical decisions belong with your treating professionals. The legal consultation can address what records may be needed for the claim and how to obtain or provide them appropriately. Avoid sending a full medical history through the initial form. A brief description can establish the reason for the inquiry, with detailed records handled through the agreed process.

05

WORK, DAILY ACTIVITIES, AND EXPENSES

Keep available records of time missed from work, changes in duties, income documents, and correspondence with an employer about the injury. If self-employed, identify the records that show the actual interruption. Preserve receipts and explain what each expense relates to, rather than estimating a single total from memory.

Also describe changes in ordinary activities with dates and concrete examples. A general statement that life has been difficult is understandable, but a review benefits from the particular tasks affected and the progression over time. The legal team can explain which documentation is relevant; a list of expenses does not itself establish that every item is recoverable.

06

LETTERS, OFFERS, AND RELEASES

Bring the complete correspondence concerning an offer, proposed settlement, benefit decision, or release. Identify any stated response date. If you have already signed or accepted something, tell counsel and provide it. A review needs the actual terms and the sequence of communications, not only the amount mentioned in a phone call.

Before deciding about a document you do not understand, ask about the proposed scope of legal advice on it. An insurer’s offer is not a website assessment of the value of your claim. The appropriate discussion considers the applicable process, the available evidence, and the terms being proposed, with no promised compensation figure.

REQUEST A CONSULTATION
07

UNDERSTAND REPRESENTATION AND FEES

Ask whether the proposed engagement covers an initial document review, communications with an insurer, negotiations, or litigation. Find out what records are needed and who will communicate with you as the file develops. The team should understand the accident date and the current stage before proposing the work.

Discuss fees and disbursements directly with the firm. This page does not promise a contingency arrangement or a “no win, no fee” policy. Any fee arrangement must be explained and agreed for the particular matter. Clear scope helps you understand what legal assistance is being offered while you continue addressing your recovery and the relevant claim steps.
